ABOUT DEB
Although a current resident of beautiful Golden, Colorado, I am a forever Californian who misses the ocean and the warmth. My husband and I have been married over twenty years, and we have two active teenage sons and a wonderful pup named Jazmin.
My educational and professional background consists of a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree, both in English, from the University of California at Santa Barbara and Boise State University respectively, 15 years teaching both high school and college English and composition, and almost a decade as a freelance editor.
I began my freelance editing business, The Write Insight, LLC, in 2014, and soon after became a member of the Christian PEN, an international network of Christian editors. I have also attended PENCON, the only conference for Christian editors and proofreaders of its kind, multiple times, and taken several PEN Institute courses and pursued extensive training in the fields of editing and publishing. I am a Gold member of the Christian PEN as well as a certified copyeditor for the Christian Editor Connection. These organizations now fall under the larger umbrella of the Christian Editors Association. I am also a member of the Editorial Freelancers Association and an original member of the Writers on the Rock, a Colorado-based writers’ group founded in 2014, having presented several years at the Writers on the Rock conference on topics such as self-editing, style sheets, and the use of dialogue.
In 2017 I was a winner of the Christian Editor Connection’s Excellence in Editing Award for my editing of Shelley Hitz’s book Broken Crayons Still Color (2016). You can find a piece I wrote, “A Letter to My 2019 Self,” featured in the online magazine for Writers on the Rock, Arise! Magazine. I also wrote and self-published my own book, called Barren and Beautiful: Discovering Joy and Healing in the Wake of Infertility (2021), which is dedicated to helping others heal after being unable to experience pregnancy or child birth. I am also a breast cancer survivor, with plans to write about that journey as well. My passion and intent is to help writers at all levels to discover their best work.
I have always loved the power of words and language and even the rules of grammar and punctuation. Whether my client is a seasoned author of many books or a brand-new author feeling compelled to write, I take pride not only in my thoroughness in finding errors but also in my ability to offer feedback to enhance my client’s prose and message. Editing and proofreading—really, all of the services I offer—are inherently both creative and collaborative, which makes my work incredibly rewarding.
